In vitro bioanalytical assessment of toxicity of wetland samples from Spanish Mediterranean coastline

Abstract Background Fresh water bodies represent less than 1% of overall amount on earth and ensuring their quality sustainability is pivotal. Although several campaigns have been performed to monitor the occurrence micropollutants by means chemical analysis, this might not cover whole set chemicals present in sample nor potential toxic effects mixtures natural anthropogenic chemicals. In sense, selecting relevant toxicity endpoints when performing vitro bioanalysis, effect-based methodologies can be help perform a comprehensive assessment reveal biological activities adverse health effects. However, no prior bioanalytical study was wetland samples from Spanish Mediterranean coastline. Methods Eleven coastline were collected 8 endpoints. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), androgenicity (AR+ AR?), estrogenicity (ER+ ER?), oxidative stress response (Nrf2) vitamin D (VDR+ VDR?) reporter gene assays evaluated. Results AhR assay showing more frequent over (activated 9 out 11 samples), with TCDD-eq range 7.7–22.2 pM. For AR, ER VDR sporadic activations observed. Moreover, activity observed Nrf2 assay.
